It was reported Saturday, 4th February 1922, that the landlord of the Bird-in-Hand had been fined "the previous Monday" for permitting gambling by charging 3d for a guess as to "How many Pips in a Pumpkin". The winner was a farmer who had guesses Forty, and was rewarded with a bottle of whisky.

One of the current bars is situated in what was a stable.
