Only found as BLACK LION 1822. Offered for sale by auction 8th July 1824. Then advertised as MEAR'S TAVERN comprising liquor shop, large porter and club-rooms, four excellent cellars, kitchen, store-room, pantry, five good sleeping-rooms, and two small chambers, with requisite offices, and large paved yard, underlaid with lead to protect the arches of the cellars. The Tavern is a most substantial building, with a handsome sashed front, no expense having been spared in the erection and completion of it, by the late proprietor, Jeremiah Mears, who established therein a very considerable Porter and Retail Spirit Trade. Admirably situated in a street of great traffic to the Market Place. Also included in the auction were a `substantial tenement and Garden, having 71 feet frontage, next the Upper Goat Lane, in the occupation of Mr. Woodbine'. Also two substantial and well-built Dwelling Houses and Shop, and 13 other dwelling houses adjoining, situate in Crook's place. Offered for sale by Private Contract 14th August 1824 |
