On Wednesday 4th January 1843, Henry Raven, aged 33, the well known pedestrian, was accused of stealing 23 pigs, the property of James Wingfield of Thorpe. 7 were traced to the BOARDED HOUSE on the Hill, others to the Peafield (Lakenham). Found guilty and being a second conviction, he was sentenced to 10 years transportation. |

That well-accustomed House, on the Castle Ditches, known by the name of the "Wooden House". The premises needing considerable alterations, the Trustees agreed to an additional percentage over the Tender, made to the Rent, upon whatever sum the Trustees and the Tenant may be considered necessary to be expended. Proposals to be received by Mr. Thomas Farnell and Mr. Richard Starkey, Churchwardens of the Parish of St. John's Maddermarket, or by the Rev. F. W. Drake, Lower Close, three of the Trustees of the Estate. Proposals to be sealed and delivered on or before Saturday, 4th August. ~ Advertised 23rd July 1831 (Wooden House )- To be Let by Tender at Michaelmas, on a Lease for Fourteen Years. All the Household Furniture and Effects of Mr. James Cooke were to be Sold Monday, 3rd October 1831. (Boarded House.) To Let for a lease of Fourteen Years as advertised 2nd August 1845.
