On Thursday 3rd June 1852, William Smith was fined 10 shillings and 12
shillings costs for allowing gambling in his house.
At a previous hearing Police-constable Miller reported that had seen a
number of 15 and 16 year old boys playing cards in the evening from 9
o'clock to 12. Mr Smith had said he knew nothing about the matter since
he was engaged from his house by his occupation as a flyman. His wife
kept the house.
Mrs Smith did not deny the charge but claimed that the policeman was not
as bad as the rest since he often betted with the boys and played
skittles with a man named Curtis.
The Magistrates then adjourned the case so the Mrs Smith could bring
witnesses against the disgraceful actions of the policeman.
At the Thursday hearing the policeman denied any betting or playing of
skittles. Mrs Smith could only provide one of the boys as a witness and
the Magistrates received his evidence with distrust.
Finding Mr Smith guilty of the gambling charge the magistrates stated
that it was not his fault, but he was responsible for the acts of his
wife.
