The exterior features an elaborate relief, made from cement, depicting St Stephens Gate. Based on an illustration by Ninham dated 1792. Shown above prior to cleaning and restoration July 2013. On the afternoon of Sunday 29th April 1838 night-watchman Tyrrell was called to clear a drunken man, Jonathan Sharman, who had been acting in a disorderly manner and threatening the landlord, Mr. Shildrake. Upon taking Sharman, Tyrell was attacked by James Brighton who threw the night-watchman to the floor and kicked him `for nearly twenty minutes'. John Wade joined in and struck the watchman several times before knocking down policeman Riches who had came to assist Tyrrell. A respectable looking man, William Pratt, took the staff from the constable and struck him several times on the head. Smithson, another constable, arrived and at the request of Pratt, took constable Riches into custody! Before the magistrates on Monday 7th May 1838 the Reverend Prebenday Wodehouse stated that he had observed the struggle between Sharman and the watchman, the latter having struck the former with a small staff in order to constrain him. A crowd, claimed that nearly a thousand, collected, seemingly against the watchman. Brighton had encouraged Sharman to resist. Sharman had been in custody four times previously, three times for felony and once for assault. Sharman, Brighton and Pratt were each fined £5 or one month's hard labour. Wade was fined £2 12s 6d or two week's hard labour. Wade and Pratt paid the fines, the others were committed.
