In need of cleaning! - November 2004 image by P. Bowden
The exterior features an elaborate relief, made from cement, depicting St Stephens Gate. Based on an illustration by Ninham dated 1792.
Shown above prior to cleaning and restoration July 2013.

On the afternoon of Sunday 29th April 1838 night-watchman Tyrrell was called to clear a drunken man, Jonathan Sharman, who had been acting in a disorderly manner and threatening the landlord, Mr. Shildrake. Upon taking Sharman, Tyrell was attacked by James Brighton who threw the night-watchman to the floor and kicked him `for nearly twenty minutes'. John Wade joined in and struck the watchman several times before knocking down policeman Riches who had came to assist Tyrrell. A respectable looking man, William Pratt, took the staff from the constable and struck him several times on the head.
Smithson, another constable, arrived and at the request of Pratt, took constable Riches into custody!
Before the magistrates on Monday 7th May 1838 the Reverend Prebenday Wodehouse stated that he had observed the struggle between Sharman and the watchman, the latter having struck the former with a small staff in order to constrain him. A crowd, claimed that nearly a thousand, collected, seemingly against the watchman. Brighton had encouraged Sharman to resist.
Sharman had been in custody four times previously, three times for felony and once for assault.
Sharman, Brighton and Pratt were each fined £5 or one month's hard labour. Wade was fined £2 12s 6d or two week's hard labour.
Wade and Pratt paid the fines, the others were committed.

In 1961 the BYSTANDERS FILM CLUB commenced a survey of Norwich public houses.
Unfortunately, by 1968 the challenge remained unfinished and Watney Mann had taken over the local breweries....Toilet facilities (Conveniences) were rated on cleanliness and general standard.
This house was rated as follows:-

Morgans
Darts Conveniences 2½ (5 being the best)

Definitely a Society pub - (c.f. Trowel)
Another Murray-Smith type mural this time on an external wall, depicts medieval St. Stephens Gates.
Comfortable lounge, very snug in winter and available for meetings.
Needham Room very popular and at weekends, populous.
Keg highly recommended.
Darts in bar (and nice print of sailing type ship).
The bloke in the Needham Room who they all think is Shakespeare isn't - he's Paul Reubens.
One of those places where parking can be a problem.

The Norwich Pub Survey of 1986, compiled by the Norwich Society, in association with Norwich City Council, assessed the house:-

Approx date of building Listed Quality Pre-war fittings surviving
External Internal
Mid19th C No 9 5 Yes
Internal walls demolished in early 1980's to create one single bar.
Fine facade with good period details.
Of particular interest is the cement panel by Moray Smith commissioned c1930 by Morgan's Brewery.
Interior has one large ground floor bar area with seating bays created by upholstered settees and cluster seating, low ceiling, mixture of beams and lincrusta, timber and brick pillared supports.
Seats, velvet cope curtains and low level wall lighting - All modern.
This used to be a Coaching Inn advantageously positioned just outside the City gates on the main London and Ipswich roads.
