From the City of Norwich records of Coroner's Inquests, held mostly at public houses, in 1831.

The inquest into the death of Abraham Cooper was held here 10th May 1831. Having shot himself in the head, the majority of jurors decided that he was a lunatic.

On 13th June 1831 it was recorded that John Thompson had hanged himself at his father's house. Verdict : "A fit of temporary derangement".

On 23rd June 1831 a verdict of "a Visitation of God" upon John Bygrave who had been "seized with an attack or paralysis and died".


Existence as a public house confirmed in newspaper reports of :-

Saturday 14th May 1831 - Location given as "the Public House known as the sign of the Grave Digger, Chapel-field Row, St. Peter Mancroft.

Saturday 18th June 1831 - Location given as Coburgh Street.

 Not identified in trade directories of 1830 and 1836.
Does not appear on 1845 Magistrates list .
