Also found as the TOPERS TAVERN 1822 to 1889. As the TOPER 1790, TOPERS 1833, 1845 & 1868, TOPERS ARMS 1847. For sale by auction Tuesday 20th April 1790 then said to be in the occupation of John Day. It is not clear if this is the John Day who owned St. Martin's Brewery, in which case an undertenant would have been at the house. Offered for sale August 1833 upon the instructions of the Executors of the late Mrs. Mary Grimwood. Sale included her residence near St. Michael at Thorn Church and the Twenty-Two Tenements forming Toper's Square. Also Nine brick and tiled Tenements in Lower Yard, contiguous to Toper's Square. Offered to let by auction 20th February 1868 by the Trustees of the Great Hospital. Including 22 houses adjoining, forming together the Square or Block of Buildings known as Topers square. To be let for a tern of 21 years from Lady-day next..... Renamed the DUKE OF FIFE January 1890. House no. 56 on 1845 Magistrates list ....as the Topers |
