House no. 338 on 1845 Magistrates list |
A Twistering Mill was to be sold at the MAN IN THE MOON as advertised 23rd September 1710. Listed by Arderon 1745 - 1760 as the MAN IN THE MOON Given as the MAN IN YE MOON 1760 MAN IN THE MOON 1763, 1830, 1836 & 1854.
A "Free and Easy" was held here on the night of Monday 1st March 1852. A Mr. Baker apparently assaulted fellow reveller William Fell at the event and was arrested, but the magistrates considered that both complainant and defendant were as bad as each other and the case was dismissed. The licensee of this house was one of seven who were fined during early October 1853, for allowing drunkenness in their house or for selling at improper hours. The editorial commenting on the enforcement of law thought it would have been better if the clamp-down had commenced with the landlords of houses of a higher class. |
