On Tuesday 24th March 1857, beerhouse keeper Henry Knyvett was
charged with selling beer without a licence.
It was claimed that beerhouse licenses could only be granted to houses rated at £15
per year or above, and the licence had been wrongly issued by the city
supervisor of excise, because the house had actually been rated at £14 10s.
The application had said that the house would be rated at £15,
based upon information from the Court of Guardians that being hired at £16
10s per year, the January rate review would be £15, but that had not
happened.
The Bench dismissed the case. |
