Previously known as the MECHANICS TAVERN, as recorded in the records of Cann & Clarke. (Wymondham Brewery)

First found as the NIGHTINGALE in 1870.

Job Kibblewhite, landlord of a beerhouse in Colegate Street, was on the list of licence applicants for a full licence, Tuesday 24th August 1869, but did not appear before the Bench.

Beerhouse keeper Job Kibblewhite applied for a full licence Tuesday 23rd August 1870 - Granted.

Landlord William Hurrell committed suicide Thursday 18th May 1882. He had been suffering from "severe indigestion" for some time and it was usually in spring when he was suffering worse than usual. For the last six weeks he had been very much depressed, saying that he had done very little business of late and believed he could not earn a living much longer. On the Thursday morning it was realised that he had not gone to the Fish market as was his custom. A about 10:00 am his body was discovered in the attic. He had a rope around his neck which was attached to a bar. Verdict Friday 18th May of "hanging himself whilst suffering from temporary insanity."

Police Inspector Cooper objected to the licence at the 1906 Licensing Sessions. It was stated that the house was unwanted by the public and presented other problems making it unsuitable. Inspector Cooper said that the house was old and in bad repair, there were structural and sanitary objections to the premises. The police found supervision difficult and there were 15 other licensed houses within 200 yards.

Licence provisionally refused Wednesday 7th February 1906.
and referred to Compensation.
