Part of the
ROYAL HOTEL, Gentlemans Walk.
Not found in Licence Registers.
Philip Keddenton, previously running a shoe shop, took on the
ROYAL HOTEL TAP on the
22nd November 1862 at a weekly rent of £1, exclusive of gas
consumed. The Gas Company refused to provide a separate account from
the
ROYAL HOTEL,
although each business had its own meter. Mr. Keddenton
arranged with Charles States to pay for his share of the gas bill on
the first Monday of every month. Not finding business at the Tap a
remunerative speculation, Mr. Keddington gave up on 2nd March 1863.
He was then presented with an outstanding gas bill of £3 4s 9d which
he considered excessive and refused to pay. On Thursday 18th June
1863 the Gas Company confirmed that the demand was valid and Mr.
Keddington was instructed to settle his account with Mr. States.
