Address also as Dove Lane.
It was reported 20th July 1822 that four villains had broken into
the house of Mrs. West, at Costessey on 10th July. They were heard
by a maid and James Edwards, a thatcher living next door. He
attacked the would-be thieves with a bludgeon and forced them away.
He was able to identify three of them, John Abel and Francis
Ploughman, two old and notorious offenders, and George Warden. The
following day warrants were issued and the three were arrested at
the house of John Abel (the house formerly being the Shoulder of
Mutton). On Friday 12th July they were committed to the Castle by
the Magistrate E. D. Payne Esq.
