c1985 Also found as the VICTORIA WINE & SPIRIT STORES, VICTORIA WINE STORES, VICTORIA STORES, & VICTORIA VAULTS. Given as the VICTORIA PORTER VAULTS 1883, 1886 & 1902. All persons being indebted to, or having claim on the estate of the late John Hart Bowgen, the younger, were requested, 29th March 1865, to settle their accounts within one month. John Hart Bowgen, the elder, coal merchant of St Lawrence, appeared before the magistrates, Saturday 24th February 1866 accused of having an unjust steelyard in his possession. An indicated measurement of 14lbs only produced 11¼lbs; 28lbs equated to 26lbs and 56lbs to 55½lbs. The device had been inspected by the assistant inspector some two weeks previously and not found at fault. The defence asked that since there was no knowledge on the part of Mr. Bowgen that the device was defective only a nominal penalty was just. Fine 40s with 12s costs. |
