Given as the JOLLY WATERMAN in 1810 and 1822. The WATERMAN INN 1846, 1850 & 1868. Stood on the corner of King Street and Horns Lane. Sign above entrance said `Roam not from pole to pole but step in here where naught excels the shaving but the beer'. (The licensee responsible for the sign was also a barber) Licensee Edward Knights was struck by lightning Monday 27th May 1889. Following surgery to his blackened arm, he was reported to be making a good recovery. Known simply as the WATERMAN by 1930's Morgans sales for 1960 were

Before the magistrates on Monday 11th January 1909, it was heard that dealer William Grimes had entered the house on 5th January, leading his donkey into the bar. Licensee George Sharman advised him that it was no place for a donkey and ejected the both of them. Grimes returned and put the butt end of his whip through the windows. On the previous Wednesday Grimes had been fined 20s with 7s costs and 7s damages on another offence. This time he was fined 10s with 9s costs and 30s damages, or one month. |
