Listed in Alehouse return of 1789.
Known as UP THE STEPS owing to its entrance.Itemised
in the sale of the Cann & Clarke Brewery in 1894 as the Brewery Tap.
At the Licensing Meeting of Tuesday 2nd February 1909 it was said that
there was one room used by the public and trade was mainly bottles of
ale and stout with small quantities of spirits.
The house was located 37 yards away from the
CROSS KEYS, 63
yards from the KINGS HEAD
HOTEL and 78 yards from the
WHITE HORSE. The
licence was referred.
(Provisional licence granted)
Licence refused at Compensation Authority meetings of 21st and 23rd June
1909.
Reported as an alehouse, owned by Morgans Brewery Co. and run by
licensee Robert Francis.
At the meeting of the Norfolk Licensing Committee, held Wednesday 15th
December 1909, it was reported that average barrelage was 23, representing
mainly bottled beer, spirits were 330 gallons, whilst minerals totalled 38
dozen. Rent was £12 10s.
For the brewery, Mr. Morgan said that beer sold was mostly in bottle and to
all intents and purpose, the property was a cellar house. There was little
accommodation for drinking on the premises and trade was mostly "off". The
house was widely known in the district as the spirit house. The firm did not
wish to close the house, since people would be forced to go to the grocer.
Compensation of £850 was offered, and accepted.
