Mr. William Benjafield applied at the Brewster Sessions of 24th August 1901 for his plans
to be sanctioned to allow the whole premises to be utilised for his licensed business.
Mr. Benjafield had purchased the COLCHESTER BREWERY STORES
in Howard Street, "part of which he had been under-lettor for 15 years. The whole had
been a Public House 15 years previously." (This appears to be the
LANCER
at numbers 23 to 24)
The application was granted on condition that there was no entrance from Row 44 and that
the door into the bar from Row 40 should be closed.
Became the KING
EDWARD VII, later the BURTON ARMS.
