Licence application by Robert Martins refused Friday 4th September 1857, the magistrates refusing to hear any application for new licenses. Robert Martins applied for a (full) licence Tuesday 6th September 1859. At the hearing it was heard that he had `rendered such essential service to the crew of the sloop Queen, of Grimsby, wrecked near Britannia Pier in October 1858'. It was said that he had made a previous unsuccessful application (1858) and had since invested a considerable amount of money and enlarged the premises. The magistrates heard that the SILK MILLS was 170 yards distant, the REGENT TAVERN 230 yards and the COACH & HORSES 480 yards. Having thought he had been promised a licence the year before, Mr. Martins was most disappointed when the magistrates voted ten for and ten against, meaning without a majority, the application was lost. Full licence granted 2nd September 1862 upon removal from the TWO BREWERS Licensee Caroline Martins was fined 5s on Monday 22nd August 1864 for allowing several persons to assemble and drink in her house at quarter past twelve on the previous Saturday night. Address in 1871 of 19 & 20 Northumberland Place. 1875 as Nelson Road North (With a London address for Mr. Derry of 78 Blackfriars Road) |
