Licence refused at licensing meeting 30th September 1867 due to misconduct and police concerns.
Application presented personally on Monday 7th October 1867 with support signed by five or six neighbours. The magistrates declined to discuss the matter and advised Mr. Clarke to re-apply the following week. (It was again refused)
Licence renewed Wednesday 18th August 1869 having been withdrawn two years previously.

On Monday 11th February 1867, William Clarke was accused of refusing to admit the police and of an assault on police-constable Miller whilst he was in execution of his duty. On the previous Thursday the police had been watching the property run by Clarke, a brothel, and when they demanded admittance to the upper floor, after searching the ground floor, Clarke closed the staircase door upon Miller's arm, pushed him away and locked the door. There had been previous complaints against the house.
The magistrates imposed a fine of 5s and 19s 6d costs.


Seemingly closed for (spirit) trade from September 1867 to August 1869.
Licence re-instated August 1869 under the new act relating to beerhouses.

Renamed the UNION JACK in August 1893
