At the Harvest Home celebration held 25th August 1857,
between 400 and 500 people gathered from about three o'clock in the afternoon at
the premises of Mr. Gowing (farmer). Rustic sports were held until five o'clock and then
the whole party sat down in a large building decorated with flowers and banners.
There they were served with tea, after which the sports were continued. At the
conclusion of the sports all returned to the building where every man was served
with 2 pints of XXX, the lads with 1 pint and the boys with half a pint. After
enjoying themselves till between nine and ten o'clock they were addressed by the
Reverend W. Boyeatt and Mr. Gowing and then retired. During the afternoon and
evening the lovers of music and singing  were gratified with well executed
pieces performed by a company of musicians from Beccles. |
