Address a 3 Theatre Street 1891 & 1901
On Friday 3rd March 1905 it was said that the
CHERRY TREE
was next door and the
EAGLE
only 85 yards away. The house was said to do good trade, and being an
ante-1869 beerhouse a considerable compensation would have to be paid if
the licence were to be refused at the Quarter Sessions.
James Isbill said he had been the tenant for five years, prior to that
he had been a postman for twenty-two years, for which he had a pension
of about £24 a year. There was a living to be made from the house
without the pension. It was frequented by the Theatre people who often
lodged there. Six or seven inquests were held every year. Steward &
Patteson reported sales of 112 barrels of beer per year.
Licence provisionally renewed and matter referred to the Quarter
Sessions.
Referred for Compensation 10th March 1922.
Licence extinct 21st February 1923
House sold by S&P 1923
