Meeting
place for two Friendly Societies in the 1880's
The `Feeling Heart Lodge' and the `Poet Cowper Lodge', both being branches of the
Manchester Unity of Oddfellows.
To celebrate the 14th anniversary of the above lodges, on Tuesday 22nd
May 1855, Brother John Wells provided an excellent dinner for nearly 200
brethren at the Assembly Hall. Before the dinner, Widdow's Brass Band
had headed the procession to church.
The house featured a 1900's Polyphon, made in Germany by Musikwerke.
The music box, in a walnut case, operated on old pennies. The machine was
sold at auction in August 1966 for £155 which included 39 records.
(In November 2004 it changed hands again - for £5287.00)
