William Hawes, a builder, was away on business on 16th May 1868, leaving his wife in charge of the house. That day, a man named Lake, from Binham, lost his life, either from a fatal injury, whilst fighting in the house, or by being run over by his own cart, whilst intoxicated. The bench imposed a fine of £5, including costs, claiming that William Hawes was to blame for allowing Lake to get into such a state. "The landlord had no right to be out if his wife could not conduct the house properly". |

Shown with permission For Sale by Auction Thursday, 26th May 1870, along with a Small Farm, 10 Cottages, a general Shop, a Blacksmith's Shop and other Buildings, upon the Instruction of Mr. Stephen Warnes. On Monday 7th February 1910 it was reported that of the four houses in Hindringham, one was certainly not required and it should be either the CROWN, which only served one road, or the FOLGATE which was well placed, should close. The latter was said to have better accommodation, so it was recommended that the CROWN should close. Both in fact survived to the 1920's.
