On Wednesday 6th June 1855, Henry Galley was charged of selling beer on 12th February, without having a licence to do so. Witness John Whiteman had entered the house, believing it to be a licensed one, it being known by the ludicrous sign of the "Eel's Foot". He was served a pint of beer by Mrs. Galley and charged 2d. There were a number of other persons drinking in the house. It was said that the house was regularly open on a Sunday when licensed houses were required by law to be closed. The magistrates fined Mr. Galley the mitigated penalty of £5 and £1 2s 6d costs.
