Lot 2 in the sale, Thursday, 22nd June 1848, of a `Highly Valuable Estate'' at Stiffkey. (The main lots including a Small Mansion surrounded with tastefully laid out Pleasure Gardens and 340 acres of Arable & Pasture land). Lot 2 described as: `A most desirably situated and Well accustomed Public House, Fronting the Road from Wells, known as the ``TOWNSHEND ARMS'' with a Cottage at the east end thereof, and a Pightle of Arable Land adjoining, containing together 0A. 1R. 21P., ....... ....... The Public House and Land is in the occupation of Mr. Jeremiah Yaxley, as undertenant to Messrs. Eyre and Chester, and the Cottage is in the occupation of Mary Ducker, at a separate rent of £2 2s 0d. and the tenants are under Notice to quit on the 11th day of October next. ...... Copyhold to the Manor of Stiffkey Netherhall with Stowes, Fine certain, 4s an acre for land and 1s for the tenement. Annual Outgoing. Land-tax 12s 0p.' ~
