Previously known as the CHEQUERS or WHITE CHEQUERS and often referred as such after becoming the BREWERS ARMS. (as referenced 1851, 1886 and 1894) Edward Nobbs applied for a (full) licence 28th August 1855 - Application refused. (Henry Nobbs is given at the Chequers in 1883 but at an un-named beerhouse in 1888. James Gooda is listed at the Chequers in 1904 but at the Brewers Arms in the Licence Registers) At the 1906 Licensing Sessions the premises were said to be small and unsuitable. Consisting of only one room, partitioned off and difficult to supervise. The tenant was in the iron trade and left his wife to run the premises during the daytime. There were 18 other licensed houses within 200 yards. Licence provisionally refused
