On the night of 5-6th March 1786, the Excise Store-room at Holt was broken into. Some Persons unknown robbed several small casks containing about Seventy Gallons of Foreign Brandy, Seventy-nine Gallons of Foreign Geneva and Twelve Gallons of Rum. The Commissioners of Excise offered a Reward of Fifty Pounds to any Person or Persons who would Apprehend or Discover any of the Parties concerned in the Burglary. See Wells
