18 year old John Steed, alias Wilkin, appeared in court 26th August 1870 accused by Police Constable Smith of being drunk and riotous . The defendant described the police officer as a `rainbow'..... `He never appeared till the storm was over'. Amongst roars of laughter the Bench observed that `these little storms must be stopped,' and fined him 2s 6d with costs of 8s 6d or 14 days detention. He was removed in Custody.
